Mixed Media Challenge

Okay, once again, I am trying my hand at Mixed Media Challenge 5.  I am not happy with these two pages, and I am not sure why - I just don't like them.

Too much color?  Too splotchy?  I think the bottom line is there is no flow.

Again, no theme.  I watched 3-4 videos on this technique, and it still isn't coming together.

Okay, you Art Media gurus out there.... what can I do different?  I am lost.... in the meantime, I will watch more videos and see if i can "get it".

Thanks for stopping by [and thanks for the input]~

Good for you for delving into Mixed Media, Vicki! You are miles ahead of me LOL! Love the bright colours of the first one and the more subtle ones on the second. Can't help you with any tips but you may have something re: the flow. Look forward to seeing more!!

Hello Vicki
Mixed media is a genre that is only limited by your imagination, but one thing you have to seriously think about is 'More is More' to create textured backgrounds with lots of depth, layering paint, pastels, gel medium, and paper, adding focal points with images, found objects etc. Forget about trying to place everything in order, but try to keep a balance in the design and not too many hues. I am still practising myself, but what I have discovered is that you have to let go of the need to control the piece..... Your first sample looks good but add more, what about some large Text or an image in the top right corner. Your second sample again needs more, stand back and look at it and if it still does not talk to you walk away and leave it for a few days, mixed media is not something you can complete in a day. I think you have the talent to be a success in this, as you have wonderful colour sense, do not be disheartened it will become easier and you will understand what you have to do, it does not have to be perfect!
And keep watching Videos.
Smiles:)

I do like the second one more than the first, but I agree that maybe you just need to add something, as that other lady said! The more you do this, the more you will like it. It is busier than your normal style!

In my humble opinion, and I am very new to this, I love your color hues...gorgeous! I'm thinking a focal point just as you do on cards is something I try to do. I like both your projects! Very colorful and unique. Keep it up 'cause it's very fun, isn't it?:-)

You are a very brave and talented woman. Brave to ask for input that while informative and meant to be helpful, can make you feel discouraged. I love your first piece. I love the circles, hexagons, script, green and the lower part. I could tell you what I would put on it but then it would be what I liked. I like what Sue had to say about letting the piece "speak" to you. Just have fun and play and don't forget to listen to the voice that says "I am talented."

Vicki, these are very pretty. I really like your first page. The colors and textures are really nice together. Your second page looks like it just needs "MORE". Mixed media is definitely different from CAS. LOL. I had a card last week that I hated. I set it aside and then added MORE and I really like how it eventually turned out. I find I get impatient with Mixed media and want to get it done fast. Because you have the arrows pointing to the sentiment making it a focal point maybe you could add some more images or objects that relate to the journey... example maps, tickets...Just a thought.

Hi Vicki! I am just beginning my mixed media journey too! I usually stop too soon. It's like I have a barrier that keeps me from "adding"! :) I have decided right now it's about the "art" journey. I love both your pages! I like the colors, the patterns and the fun embellishments on your first one. I like the second one too with the fun arrows! Have fun!!

Love the vibrant colors on your pages Vicki! I find that starting out - I'm trying to 'copy' others mixed media projects and that never works out - we have to find out what our own comfortable design style is - but there's no way to get there accept to keep trying!! so we'll both keep trying Vicki!!
